DIY Bathroom Renovation

I'll put a disclaimer here before anyone comes for me. I am not a professional; I love decorating, reorganizing, changing things around the house, and doing minor renovations.

My style and "vibe" have definitely changed over the years. Or rather, they have evolved. I went from liking stark white and grey decor to wanting a more natural, warm, and homey vibe where I incorporate more greenery, beige, and wood tones. I am also obsessed with black accents, which you'll start to see as I show you the mini renovations and transformations I have done throughout the house.

So, we'll start this mini reno series with my half bath!

It was your typical half-bathroom. Plain, dull, and just outright sad. I hated using it because it was bland, and it simply did not bring me joy. Impulsively, I decided it needed to change, and it needed to happen right then and there...so I got started.

What kickstarted this reno was this Ikea Stockholm mirror I bought about a year prior. I bought it to redo one of the bathrooms but had no plan in place, so I just said fuck it and bought it anyway (has anyone read my ADHD impulsive spending blog yet? lol).

With this mirror being the starting point, I had to figure out what I wanted to do next. Whenever I'm feeling a change, I usually head to Pinterest to spark my creativity and give ideas. Then, I decide the direction I want to go from there. So here is what I figured out. Change all the hardware (faucet, towel holder, etc.), change the light fixture, add some accessories, and possibly paint.

Here are some "before" pictures to show you what I was working with, and you'll be able to see why I wanted to change everything.

So blah and boring, right? I'm not saying you spend much time in your half-bath, and we don't have many people over who see it, but in my mind, transforming this space was important to me.

I'll try to recount my thought process with this reno and the steps I tried to follow in order.

Steps:

  1. Remove the current mirror and light fixture (make sure to turn off your power before doing anything electrical).

  2. Fill in holes, sand, and re-paint.

  3. This is the step where I decided to paint the walls half black for contrast. I measured this all out by hand and made sure it was level. I could have made this step a lot easier for myself by getting one of those laser levels, but of course, I was impatient and wanted to do it ASAP. I also used the wrong type of paint because I only had matte-finish black paint on hand, and I did not want to waste time by getting a satin finish paint. I recommend a satin finish for anything in the bathroom or kitchen, and I might even consider redoing this step.

  4. Hang the new Ikea mirror.

  5. Find new matte black hardware, a new faucet, and a new light fixture.

  6. Replace the new faucet and hardware for towels, etc.

  7. Find canvas prints online for my Amazon frames.

  8. Hang photos.

*Photo hanging tip - if you don't have a center hanging hook and need to hang two nails or screws for 1 photo, do this: attach painter's tape to the back of the photo and punch out the center of the holes where the photo hangers are. Ensure the tape is level and straight on; otherwise, this won't work. Put that piece of tape on the wall where you want to hang it, and make sure that piece of tape is level. Screw or nail in your hardware for hanging, and voila!

Here are links to everything I ordered and used online! My rug, basket, and hand towels are all from HomeSense.

More often than not, I would recommend Amazon for matte black hardware purchases. They are excellent quality, have a great return policy, and are cheaper than buying in stores like Home Depot and Rona. I also buy my kitchen cabinet hardware on Amazon as well.

Please reach out if you have any questions about this mini reno or need links! I love finding decor and items for people online and would love to help.
